Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma was introduced to the US in the spring of 1995. It included features such as a driver-side airbag, three engines - two cylinder and a V6, and new interior and exterior styling. The Toyota Tacoma came with a redesigned chassis and suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and the option of 4-wheel ABS. There was a choice between 4WD and 2WD models.

Before 1995, there were many different Toyota trucks. In 1964, the first Toyota truck, the Stout, was imported to the US. In 1965, it was the Hi-Lux pickup, followed by the Toyota SR5 Sport Truck in 1975.

In 1979, Toyota introduced its 4x4 pickups to the US and they became the number one selling compact 4x4 trucks. Xtracab pickups came to America in 1984. These were followed by new models which came with car-like interiors, aerodynamic bodies and 4WDemand with automatic locking front hubs.

After 1995...

The Toyota Tacoma went through many changes over the years. In 1996, the Tacoma came with a locking rear differential. It was available only on manual transmission equipped regular-cab 4WD models. 2WD models came with a rear differential locking system, a tachometer and 31-inch tires on alloy wheels. 4WD models were more expensive than their 2WD counterparts, and included bucket seats, center console and 4WDemand.

In 1997, 2WD models came with a new grille and flush headlights. A new ignition system and a new sequential multi-point fuel injection system were also part of the package.

The PreRunner was introduced in 1998. 4WD models came with a new front bumper and grille design and there was a passenger side cutoff switch for child seats. Seat belt pretensioners were added in 1999.

In 2000, intermittent windshield wipers were now standard on the Tacoma and ABS models now had daytime lights. 4-door Double Cabs were introduced in 2001. Toyota also introduced a new S-Runner model in that year. There were very few changes in 2002, but in 2003 all models came with anti-lock brakes.

2004 and 2005 models meet motorists' needs and expectations more than ever before.
